How PNG-to-JPG Conversion Works

PNG is a lossless format that can also support transparency; JPG is a lossy format that cannot represent transparency at all. This tool decodes your PNG's pixel data and re-encodes it as JPG, applying lossy compression at your chosen quality level — any transparent areas in the original PNG are filled with a solid background color (typically white) before conversion, since JPG has no concept of a transparent pixel.

A Worked Example

A 2 MB PNG logo with a transparent background, converted to JPG at 85% quality, might shrink to around 200–400 KB — a significant size reduction — but the previously transparent background area will now appear as a solid white (or whichever background color the tool applies) rectangle behind the logo, since that transparency information is discarded during conversion.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

When This Tool Helps — and When It Isn't Enough

Useful for reducing file size of photographic PNGs, or when a platform specifically requires JPG format. If your image relies on transparency or contains sharp text/line art, consider keeping it as PNG or WebP instead, both of which support transparency and handle sharp edges better than JPG.

File Size & Browser Notes

PNG to JPG works entirely client-side in your browser, so there's no upload wait and no server-side file size cap — the practical limit is how much memory your device and browser have available for large images.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will converting PNG to JPG lose transparency?+
Yes. JPG doesn't support transparent pixels, so any transparent areas in your PNG are filled with a solid background colour (usually white) during conversion. If you need to keep transparency, PNG or WebP are better choices.
Is PNG to JPG conversion lossy?+
Yes, JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded to reduce file size. For most photos the difference is barely visible at a high quality setting, but for graphics with sharp text or edges it can introduce slight blur or artifacts.
Why would I convert a PNG to JPG instead of keeping PNG?+
JPG files are usually much smaller than PNG for photographic images, which helps with faster page loads, smaller email attachments, and lower storage use, when transparency isn't needed.
Is my image uploaded anywhere during conversion?+
No. The entire conversion happens locally in your browser using JavaScript — your image is never sent to our servers.
