JPG and PNG store image data very differently: JPG uses lossy compression optimized for photos, while PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency. This tool decodes your JPG's pixel data and re-encodes it as a PNG file — since PNG is lossless, converting a JPG to PNG preserves exactly the pixel data the JPG already had (including any compression artifacts already baked into it), it just re-packages that data in a different, lossless container format going forward.
Because JPG is lossy, any detail already lost when the original photo was saved as JPG cannot be recovered by converting to PNG — the PNG output will be pixel-for-pixel identical to how the JPG currently looks, just stored losslessly from that point forward. This means the PNG file is often significantly larger than the JPG, since PNG generally can't compress photographic detail as efficiently as JPG's lossy algorithm.
Useful when a platform or workflow specifically requires PNG format, or when you need to add transparency to an image going forward. If your goal is simply reducing file size or general-purpose photo storage, JPG generally remains more efficient than PNG for photographic content.
JPG to PNG works in every modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on both desktop and mobile, and there's no file size limit imposed by the tool itself — very large images are only limited by your device's available memory.
