How to Resize Images for Websites Without Guesswork

A practical guide to choosing image dimensions, keeping proportions, and checking image quality before publishing.

Know the display size

Check the space the image will occupy on the page. Avoid uploading a very large image when it will only appear as a small thumbnail.

Preserve aspect ratio

Keep the original width-to-height proportion unless you intentionally want to crop the image. This prevents stretched faces, logos and objects.

Choose suitable dimensions

Use dimensions that fit the layout and the sharpness required by high-density screens. There is no single ideal size for every website.

Compress after resizing

Resizing reduces pixel dimensions; compression reduces file weight. For many images, resizing first and then reviewing compression gives better control.

Check the final image

Preview the image on mobile and desktop. Look for blur, jagged edges, clipped subjects and unexpectedly large file sizes.
