How to Choose the Right Image Format: JPG, PNG or WebP

Learn when to use JPG, PNG and WebP for websites, documents, sharing and everyday image tasks.

Start with the purpose

The best image format depends on where the image will be used. A photograph, transparent logo and web graphic do not have the same requirements.

When JPG makes sense

JPG is commonly used for photographs and images with many colours. It can produce compact files, although repeated saving may reduce image quality.

When to use PNG

PNG is useful for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images that need transparency or crisp edges. Its files can be larger than comparable JPG images.

Why consider WebP

WebP is designed for web delivery and can often provide a smaller file at a comparable visual quality. Check that the apps and services you use support it.

Keep an original copy

Before converting or compressing, save the original. Compare the exported file at its intended display size and check transparent areas, colours and fine text.
